Charlee is almost 2 months old! We are enjoying our days together! She likes to swing in her swing and play under her playgym mat. She is smiling more and more everyday and is noticing things around her. It is such a blessing being a mommy! She makes me smile with just a thought of her! I am going to be coming to the school for the Terry Fox walk this Friday. Charlee and I will be walking the walk! This is weather permitting and if Charlee is having a good day that is! I am pretty sure we will be there!!

It's a GIRL!!

Hi all!

Just wanted to inform you all that my husband and I welcomed our little princess into the world on August 3 at 2:26 AM. She weighed 7 pounds 11 ounces and is 20 inches long. We named her Charlee Denaie Lafantaisie. She is absolutely perfect!

We came home at noon on Thursday, August 5. Mommy and baby are doing well and adjusting to our new life together very well! I could stare at her all day long!!!

I posted pictures of her and will post more as time goes on!

Field Trip

Our field trip is on Tuesday, June 28th. We will be leaving at 9 AM and returning for the buses at the end of the day.
We are going to Winkler. When we get there we will be playing for a bit in the park. After we will be eating our own bagged lunches in the park and then heading to the bowling alley for glow bowling.
We have paid for 2 rounds of glow bowling. ($5) Any additional money that students bring is their responsibility and they can do what they want with it. There are chips, bars, and drinks at the alley.

I have noticed a lack of respect from some of the students in terms of how they are treating each other and general behaviour in the classroom and at recess. I have talked to the students about this and have decided that if they are not going to follow the rules then they will not be a part of the field trip. The field trip is a PRIVILEGE not a right. I can not take them out in public if they can not act properly together here at school. If a student gets three checkmarks then they are out of the field trip. So far there are only 4 or 5 students with one checkmark.

I want to have a fun day and am looking forward to the trip with ALL of my students. It is up to them and the choices they make whether they will be a part of it or not.

Thank you to all parents who have volunteered to go on the trip. I have 6 who volunteered however I do not need 7 adults with 27 students. I will be writing in agendas tomorrow as to who will be coming for parents. I have based it on if you have come on a trip this year (Altona Kids At Play and Symphony in Winnipeg) or not already so that other parents can have a chance to go on a trip.

Also I would like to remind everyone to study for spelling tests. I have noticed a lot of spelling marks go down over the last few weeks. It is important to study at least 10 minutes a night.

Here are some tips/ideas to study:
--write them in different colours 3 times each
--make sentences with your words
--make a word search with your words
--spell them aloud and then check
--practice your list and your sibling's lists together (play school, play games, etc.)
--spell them aloud in the car while driving to an evening activity, or while you are doing chores, setting the table, washing dishes, etc.
--write a story using all your words in it

As well, please keep up with your reading logs. I have not seen some of your for a long time. We read every day during the reading block so I know that you are reading pages! I would LOVE for everyone to enjoy the reading goal treat at the end of the month! Who doesn't love ice cream with sauce and sitting in the sun?? Or would you rather do Language Power guys!?!?!

It is nearly May and the time is flying by! We have 2 months left of school!

Here are some of the big projects and topics we will be doing in the last bit of school: (Still so much to do!!)

Social Studies--French and British Colonies in North America, Conflicts with French, British, and the Aboriginal people, The Fur Trade

As well spelling, Language Power, journals, and other daily assignments and routines will be ongoing.

I will be planning our field trip very shortly and should have the date confirmed by next week. I am trying to arrange glow bowling. I have done that in the past with my students and it is a blast!!

Students please get your April assignments completed. I have noticed some of you are neglecting to use your checklists and are forgetting to bring your agenda to school. Parents please help by asking to see your child's agenda everynight. If the students have it at school, we write the homework that is needed to be completed each day.

This month is flying by! We have started our Star of the Month stories already and there are 9 students with birthdays this month! That's a record for me! Happy Birthday Grade 5's! We also need REMINDERS (plenty of them these days) to be quiet during classtime. There are a lot of us in the room and we have work to do so using time wisely is essential!

There are some students who are still needing to finish February assignments. It is important to stay caught up as we have begun a new month!

Please continue to work in class grade 5's and take things home BEFORE the end of the month to stay caught up!

We are almost done our Novel Literature Group studies. When students are finished their novels and comprehension group questions, they will be working on an end project. I will be explaining it on Monday, March 7. They will be given class time to work on it but may need home time as well.

Just another reminder that all February assignments need to be completed for end of Monday (28th), first thing Tuesday. We will have our earned free time on Tuesday afternoon (March 1).

The math test on long division is on Tuesday, March 1. I have been encouraging the students to bring their practice booklets home all week to prepare for the test. They will also be asked to take it home for the weekend as well. Practice is the only way to get better and learn the steps!

The social studies explorer posters will be excepted on Monday as well. We worked on them in class for the last 2 weeks using 1 or 2 periods a day. They will be sent home for the weekend to finish as well.

The I Love To Read reading goal treats will be given on Wednesday, March 2 and the new reading goal booklets will be handed out then. If you are close to your goal, read this weekend to reach it!

Just a reminder for everyone to continue to practice their basic multiplication and division facts. We have been taking these concepts further in class and I have noticed errors for many students with basic facts.

Simple things to do at home to practice:

1. Play multiplication war with a deck of cards. (Multiply the two cards you lay down, first person to say right answer keeps the cards. K=0, Q=12, J=11, rest of the numbers are face value)

2. Practice your basic facts in the car on the way to an after school activity or on the bus to and from school. (Have a parent or sibling or friend ask you questions and you give the answers.)

3. Practice your basic facts while doing chores like setting the table, doing the dishes, or working outside on the farm.

4. Instead of playing Wii or video games on the computer, find some fun basic fact games on the internet to play.

5. Get a piece of paper and see how many facts you can write down in 3 minutes.

6.. Make up a Mad Minute worksheet. Put 20 - 30 different facts on a paper and try to solve them in 2 minutes.

It is very important to learn your facts. It will make math easier for years to come. Keep practicing guys!

February is I Love To Read Month. In our classroom we have been promoting reading all year long with our reading goals and incentives. This month we will be continuing with tracking our reading as well as we will be doing some activities in the classroom. We will also be doing some special activities with our reading buddies to celebrate I Love To Read Month.

We are also in the midst of a social studies project. The students are busy reasearching explorers. We hope to have this project done in a few weeks.

We are continuing with the study of WWII and there are two novels being read in the classroom. Number the Stars and Snow Treasure are both novels about young children living in war torn countries during WWII. We are working on group work and respecting each other's opinions in our literature groups. It is nice to see the students take an interest in WWII topics, have empathy for the people during the war, and appreciate the freedoms they have today. There will be an end of unit test on the novels and an individual project when they are finished reading the books.

In Math we are working on 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication. We learned a new way to solve the equations and many students caught on to the concept well. I know that many parents may be a bit confused with the concepts. The reason I am showing the students two ways is because we all learn in different ways. Some students will understand and have success with the new way and others will do well with the old way we all learned when we were in school. I am showing them both ways and they can choose which way is best for them to work out the answers.

We will be having a multiplication test very soon and a review will be sent home.

I will post the due dates for the ss explorer project and math test soon.

Homework and Assignments

I just want to STRESS the importance of completing assignments,using class time to your advantage, and completing homework.

I usually send homework home with the students if they have had time in school to finish and have not completed the work. They are given adequate time to complete assignments. For some, class time is spent chatting, playing with papers and supplies, and generally just not working.

I encourage each and every student to focus on yourself and your work and use your time in school to complete assignments. I also encourage the students to complete their homework when it is sent. Do not leave things to the last minute.

You are all very capable and bright students and can achieve many things when you put your mind to it!!

WWII

We have started an ELA unit on WWII. To begin the unit I am reading aloud a novel named "Someone Called Eva". It is a historical fiction novel about a girl who was taken from her home in the middle of the night by Nazi soldiers. She was then separated from her whole family and put in an old church turned into a school with other girls. They were chosen to be "good German girls" because they have blond hair, blue eyes, and the right size of nose. It is very sad and very moving to read.

We are also reading some informational pieces about the war and weapons and ships that were used in that era.

After we will be splitting up into two literature groups and each group will be reading a different novel. The two novels are about WWII. They are called "Snow Treasure" and "Number the Stars". The students will be working in groups reading the novels, answering questions both in discussion format and written format, and doing other activities related to the novel they are reading.

I have noticed a real interest in this topic with the class and everyone seems to be into the read aloud novel I am reading. It is hard not to feel for the characters and feel fortunate that we are not living in that time.

Welcome Back Everyone!

I trust that you all had a fun filled and relaxing holiday break! I certainly did! My husband and I enjoyed the sun, ocean, pools, beaches, and great food during our honeymoon in St. Lucia! We got to see volcanoes, the rainforest, and the Carribean Sea. It was an awesome trip for sure!

We are back to school and ready to work....right guys??!!??

We will be starting group novel studies next week. We will be continuing with multiplication and division in math and exploring First Peoples and Explorers in Social Studies. Look forward to many projects this term!

Our reading incentive for January-February is going to be "For the Love of Reading" and the treat will be cinnamon hearts and Valentines cookies.

We have two days this week so we will ease back into the swing of things!

Checklists and Agendas

Hey Everyone!

Just a friendly reminder to use your personal checklist to your advantage. It is a tool for you to organize your assignments. It is to be kept in your agenda in the clear plastic pocket. You are required to copy your assignments down from the big classroom checklist. When you complete an assignment, check it off! It is that simple!

Also....PLEASE have your agendas at school every day and on your table top all day when you are in the classroom. If you have a note from your parents for me to read you need to show it to be at the beginning of the day! Sometimes I do not see them till 3:30 or not till the next day! Thanks guys!

Christmas is literally around the corner! I am sure you are all very excited! I am very excited as well! I am going away for the holidays and can not wait! It will be my first Christmas without snow!

Conferences

This Thursday and Friday are parent conferences. I would love to see all parents and their grade 5 student attend!

The students have worked hard this term and have lots to share with you! They have picked some items to put in their portfolios. Also the Autobiographies are on display and ready for parents to read as they wait for their conference to begin!

Please try to keep the appointments no longer than 15 minutes each to allow for every one to have a turn.

BUSY!

Sorry guys! I haven't had time to update my blog lately! I have been busy with marking autobiographies (which look fabulous by the way!), and working on assessments for report cards.

I am proud of all the hard work you have done this term.

Please be sure to work hard and try your best on all that you have to do. We need to start being quieter in class and focus on ourselves. Be sure to listen to instruction time and ask for help. There are 29 of you and 1 of me. I need you to come to me if you need extra help, extra time on an assignment, or anything else!

I have also noticed we need a lot of help with the basic facts and with adding and subtracting with carrying and borrowing. Word problems are also a weak spot. I am planning on making an extra practice booklet with these skills for you to keep for spare time at school. We will be expanding on these concepts in term 2.

Right now in SS, we are sharing oral stories with the class just like the First Peoples did a long, long time ago. It isn't an easy task to remember! Thank goodness for paper and books!

Just a reminder that your Reading Goals for September-October end this Friday. We will be enjoying a free reading period and some apples and caramel sauce if you reached your goal. Be sure you are counting pages read!

I would also like to encourage many of you to read on the bus, on the way to an appointment or activity in the car, before bed, in the morning before class starts, etc.! Reading is something you can do nearly anywhere and at almost anytime!

--Terry Fox Assembly is on Tuesday, October 13 at 1:00 PM in the gym.

--Book orders for October are due on Tuesday, October 13.

--Autobiography rough copies for ALL 12 chapters are due on October 19.

--Spelling exercises are due every week.

--Meet the teacher night is on Thursday, October 14 at 7 PM. (I am hoping to see all of the Gr. 5 parents there!!)

--Reading Log's are due on October 28th. We will be having the reading period and treat for those who reached their goal on October 29th.

--September/October Star of the Month celebration will be on October 29 in the afternoon. Stars for these months please bring a treat to share with the class.

--Grade 5's: Be sure to be filling out your October assignment checklist from the class one on the board. You are responsible for keeping up and getting assignments completed

--Agendas are important and need to be brought every day!

I have started reading tests and will be working hard to get them done as soon as I can. I need cooperation from the other students while I am testing. I have also tested spelling levels and will be making new spelling groups for this year. This will be explained at Meet The Teacher as well.

Reading Goals

Remember that at the end of October we are finished with our 2 month reading goals for our Bite Into A Good Book program. Some of you had to adjust your goals as you were reaching them in the first month! Way to go!!

For November and December you should have a good idea of what a goal should be. Increase what you read for September and October and you will have your goal!

October is here already!

September has flown by! It is hard to believe that we have been through one month of school. School has been an adjustment for us all as we are learning the routines and expectations of the classroom.

I have noticed an improvement on work habits for many of you this month. I want to remind all of you to work in class and try to focus on yourself. I know having so many in the room can be distracting, however everyone needs to respect each other and cooperate so that each student can focus and get their work done.

If you work hard and use your class time for assignments, you will not have to use home time or recess to finish.

Parents: I have sent home a letter to you outlining the assignment checklist and free period incentive for our classroom. The students now have 3 visual checklists to keep their monthly completed assignments organized. There is a class checklist poster, an individual table checklist, and now a checklist in each student's agenda. My hope is that they will gain independence, take responsibility for their learning, and motivate themselves to work in class to get their assignments completed. I have and will continue to remind them to stay caught up with their work and not wait until the end of the month to complete their work. I will also be there for them to help if they are having difficulty with the concepts we are learning.

Please do not hesitate to talk to me directly if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

Hi guys!

I hope you all had a great weekend! It was a long weekend at that! Today was such a beautiful day and hopefully it will be like that for the week including Terry Fox walk on Thursday.

Just a few reminders for tomorrow and the rest of the week! Tomorrow I am away but business is as usual! Work hard and be kind and respectful to the substitute, Mrs. Roman.

Be sure to study for spelling this week and get your assignments completed as the month is almost at an end! To earn your free period you need to have all monthly assignments finished. You must have at least 7 rough drafts done for your autobiography. Language Power lessons 1-4, spelling exercises 1,2, and 3, Loser Chapters 1-8 questions, star story, and all other work listed on the class checklist needs to be completed for Thursday.

Autobiographies have been started! I hope everyone is excited to write their life story! I am sure you will enjoy learning about your family through this assignment.

Be sure you are working in class. Today is a lot quieter already grade 5s! Is it because you are tired from Kids at Play yesterday?

Speaking of Kids at Play....it was such a wonderful day! I loved watching all of your smiling faces as you participated in golf, beach volleyball, tennis, and dance! You seemed to like the bouncy house the best! The magician was funny and entertaining for sure and my favourite of the day!

Remember spelling exercises are due every Friday. Also there is the spelling test tomorrow! I hope you studied!

First Day

Well....congratulations guys! We all made it through our first day of school! It seemed to fly by didn't it? I only got to spend 5 periods with you as you had gym, french, and health today. We will have plenty of time to get to know each other this year, don't worry!!

For the rest of the week we will be getting to know the routines of the classroom, writing about our summers, getting to know each other better, and getting back into the swing of things!

Next week I will be starting to test all of you in reading, spelling, and math. This will better prepare me for my planning and teaching this year.

We will also be setting our reading goals for September - October.

School This Week!!!!

I am back to work tomorrow! The teachers have been busy the last few weeks getting things ready for the start of the year! Tomorrow we have meetings all day while you enjoy your last day of freedom!

I am looking forward to this week and getting to know all of you better! We have nearly 30 students in the room. It is going to be a packed house and we will all have to cooperate and respect each other in every way so that we all reach our goals and have fun!

My Summer in a Nutshell

Hey There!

I had a FABULOUS summer! It was very busy and a bit stressful as I was planning my wedding! I will get back to the wedding in a minute....

The first week of my summer was spent at Clear Lake with my family. We have been spending a week there every summer for the past 5 years. It is one of my favorite places to be and I spend it with my favorite people! We stay in a cabin and have BBQ's every night! This year we rented a Pontoon boat for an afternoon and had a blast! My brother enjoyed going super fast over the waves and watching us get soaked!! I cuddled under a blanket with my niece Avery and we giggled as we got splashed!

The rest of July was pretty low key. I did some wedding planning and preparations, went to the beach, visited with friends and babysat my nieces. At the beginning of August, Al and I went to Fargo. We stayed there for two nights and I shopped till I dropped! We enjoyed the get away and the food! We love the restaurants in the States....however I really craved some fruit and salad when I got home! My niece, Avery stayed over at our house for two nights. We went to the Children's Museum, walked around The Forks and had lunch there, made cookie pizza, watched movies, made crafts, played in the park and ran through the sprinkler. We were sure busy for those two days!!

August was busy with wedding prep as we got married on August 20. We got married at Fort Gibraltar here in Winnipeg. It was a beautiful day and we were lucky that we got to share it with our family and friends. Our wedding day was perfect! I had so much fun and enjoyed everything about it! I will be sure to bring in some pictures to share with my new fives as well as the "new" grade 6's.

Now August is ending and I am preparing for the new school year. I was in my classroom last week rearranging the tables and shelves so we can fit all 29 of the fabulous fives in there! I have more things to do next week and will be visiting my classroom a few more times before school starts. I am definitely excited about the new year and have a lot of ideas and things planned already! It is going to be a fun filled year full of learning, growing, laughter and happiness!
